About the author
Dr Natalie Cawley is a Counselling Psychologist and psychotherapist with over a decade of experience in both the NHS and private practice. Natalie holds a PhD in Counselling Psychology, a master’s and undergraduate degree in Psychology, she is a certified trainer in neurodiversity. Her debut book, Just About Coping—a real-life drama from the psychotherapist’s chair—was published by Picador in July 2024 and has received glowing reviews and praise, including from the Sunday Times. The paperback of Just about coping is coming July 24th 2025.
Natalie brings her clinical insight to a wider audience through her work as a consultant on TV dramas, through writing and featuring in publications including The Telegraph, The Mirror, and Cosmopolitan. She has also appeared on high-profile podcasts such as Slo Mo with Mo Gawdat, The Stompcast with Dr Alex George, and Enough with Mandy Lehto.
Across such platforms, Natalie shares the core message of her book: to strip away shame and stigma around mental health struggles and the coping strategies we all rely upon to survive. Blending compelling patient stories with her own, she uses self-disclosure as a therapeutic and humanising tool—practising what she preaches and reminding us that connection and acceptance are fundamental and help us heal. After all, we’re all just one life event away from sitting in her office.

In this lively and honest memoir of training to be a psychotherapist, we meet the patients grappling with mental health issues, from OCD and addiction to self-deception and self-harming, and see how Dr Natalie helps them understand and change these attempts to self-soothe.
Funny, poignant and full of ‘aha’ moments, Just About Coping is a journey into our inner worlds, where the drama of our break-ups, breakdowns and breakthroughs takes place.
